Dream x Goal x Plan x Action

I have a four-step plan for creating everything you want in life if you follow it. The formula is Dream x Goal x Plan x Action.

To be successful, you have to dream first.

What do you dream of having?

Too many people stop dreaming around the age of 25 and when people stop dreaming they become willing to settle for average.

Of course most people reading this don’t fall into that category. Why? Because you’re reading this, so you must have some dreams left.

Did you ever notice how life goes faster the older you get. When you’re a child a year is a long time but when you’re 30, 40, 50, 60 or older a year is just a small percentage of your life.

You need to plan what you want to do in your life or you’ll eventually run out of time.

That’s why you need to have a bucket list, or a list of 101 goals to do before your 4000 weeks on earth are up.

Imagine going through life without seeing the Seven Wonders of the World or the Great Barrier Reef. Without a dream, you will never see those places.

I find that people don’t dream enough these days. And when they do dream, those dreams are diminished by dream stealers.

Dream stealers are those who tell you what you can’t accomplish. And you know what? That’s complete rubbish. If you’re willing to do the work and learn, then you can do exactly what you’ve dreamed.

Now score how good you are at dreaming about the future on a scale of 1-10.

If you’ve written everything down and spelled everything out, give yourself a 10. If you have just a vague notion of what you want to accomplish, give yourself a one.

Goals are the next step and you need to set a timeframe to reach your goals.

Don’t plan anything more than five years out. The world changes too fast to plan for a longer period of time.

You should have one year, three year and five year goals and they should be well documented, realistic and attainable.

Now once more, score yourself on a range of 1-10, with a 10 if you have an absolutely clear picture and time frame to reach your goals and a one if your goals are just basic ideas.

Now it is time to plan.

Every business has a plan. Unfortunately for too many businesses, that plan is in one place… the owner’s brain. And because of the location, the plan is constantly changing.

Is your plan strong enough?

It isn’t if you can’t give your plan to someone like me and find I’d be willing to invest in your business.

Could you give your plan to someone qualified to run your business, leave and know that when you came back your business would be running as smoothly as ever?

If you can’t answer no to either question, your plan simply isn’t good enough.

You may say, “But Brad, I don’t have the time to write a real plan.” But do you have time to fix the mistakes made in your business? The right plan can eliminate lots of those mistakes before they happen.

The last step in the formula is Action.

Action is not about how hard you work, but how much of the right work you do. Too many business owners try to save a wage, but in doing so they cost themselves a fortune.

If you are working in your business instead of on it you are costing yourself every day.

Are you doing the right work for your business?

I see lots of business owners who are only running their business because they own it, not because they are qualified to run it.

If you’re the best salesperson in your company, why go into management? Why not keep selling and hire someone to run the business?

Remember, do what you do best and do what you’re qualified for and hire people to handle the other parts of your business.

Once more, grade yourself in Action on a scale from 1-10. Now take all four numbers and multiply them together. If your score 10,000 then you are way ahead of the game when it comes to Dream, Goal, Plan, Action.

More likely, you scored under 100, which gives you MASSIVE room for improvement!
